Competition, efficiency and interest rate margins in Latin American banking

► We study the determinants of interest rate margins for Latin American banks. ► Concentration and market share have little or no influence on interest rate margins. ► More efficient and more competitive banking markets result in lower spreads. ► Economic growth appears to reduce spreads.
