Enhancement of adhesion by a transition layer: Deposition of a-C film on ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) by magnetron sputtering

The surface roughness (Ra) dropped from 38.23 nm to 16.13 nm after plasma treatment. No cracks appeared around crater c, which indicated preferable vertical adhesion was achieved through the transition layer.
