Enhancement of the ultraviolet emission of ZnO nanorods by terphenyl liquid-crystalline ligands modification

► A simple method is developed to greatly enhance the ZnO NRs band-edge emission and effectively suppress deep-band emission by surface modified with liquid crystal ligands. ► The dispersion and band-edge emission can be further improved by annealing treatment at liquid crystalline state temperature of HTph-OH.
