► Hydrothermal stability of mesoporous materials has attracted a lot of attention owing to many practical applications. ► Micropore-free SBA-15 can be used as a model host to investigate the behavior of matter in confined space and fabricating nanowires and related areas of nanotechnology. ► Characterization of micropore-free as well as investigation of the structure and location for five-membered ring subunits. ► Discussed the mechanism of highly hydrothermal stability.
