Surface modification of nanosheet oxide photocatalysts

► Several new Aurivillius phases identified as active photocatalysts. ► Protonation followed by dehydration increases the photoreaction rate by 3 times. ► High energy milling decreased particle size without degrading photoactivity. ► Photodegradation occurs only on the particle surfaces, not in interlayer galleries.
