Elucidation of the indirect H-H interaction in (2 × 1)-H/Pd(3 1 1) and on Pd(1 1 1)

- A significant cross-corrugation H-H interaction has been observed on Pd(3 1 1).
- Identical indirect H-H interactions exist on both Pd(3 1 1) and Pd(1 1 1).
- The indirect H-H interaction in both cases is mediated by surface-state electrons.
