Magnetic field induced self assembly and optical memory of pi-ring containing fluorophores

► Small aromatic fluorophores can self-assemble in response to static magnetic field. ► Their emission is enhanced in a polarization dependent fashion. ► Planar pi-ring molecules show more efficient self assembly. ► The field induced memory effect has a time scale of the order of seconds.
