Opening a large band gap for graphene by covalent addition

► A principle to open large band gap for graphene is proposed. ► An optimum addition pattern for band gap opening is suggested at a given H coverage. ► The graphene band gap can be continuously tuned from 0 to 5.2 eV by hydrogenation.
