Endohedral cage and layered structures of Al46

► Al46 clusters with closed shells could be expected to be a stable magic cluster. ► Endohedral cage and layer-stacking structures are competitive for magic Al46. ► Calculated PES of an endohedral cage is in agreement with the experimental data.
