Impact energy dependence of defect formation in single-walled carbon nanotubes

► We study the collision dynamics of carbon ions with single-walled carbon nanotubes. ► Incident threshold energy of defect formation is predicted. ► Displacement threshold energy is calculated by eliminating the thermal effect. ► Penetrating threshold energy of single-walled carbon nanotubes is proposed. ► Formation process of typical defect is investigated.
