Phase transition of ice Ic to ice XI under electron beam irradiation

► The phase transition of ice Ic to ice XI under electron beam irradiation was observed by TEM. ► The phase transition occurs on the time-scale of a laboratory experiment. ► We argue that the phase transition to ice XI readily occurs in outer space, contrary to the prevailing notion.
