A weakened structure-breaking effect of Na+ and Cl− on water inside partially filled mesoporous silica

► We reveal the effect of NaCl salt on the OH stretching vibration of confined water. ► Ions preferentially destroy the tetrahedrally coordinated structures in core water ► Ions scarcely affect the interaction between silanols and the unconnected interfacial water film.
