The J-mixing effect in Ln3+ ions crystal field levels

► J-mixing effect is analysed through the first order perturbation theory without approximations. ► The main predictions are a reduction in the level splitting and a lowering in the barycentre energy. ► Repulsion between close levels with similar irreducible representations explains this lowering.
