Binding of molecular hydrogen to halide anions: A computational exploration of eco-friendly materials for hydrogen storage

► The interaction of molecular hydrogen with halide anions is investigated with the aid of DFT calculations. ► The bromide anion has the ability to bind up to seven hydrogen molecules. ► QTAIM analyses reveal the presence of closed-shell interactions. ► Eco-friendly and low-cost materials for hydrogen storage are proposed.
