► Mg2+ has hydration characteristics typical of a charged ion in an aqueous solution. ► SO42- anion behaves differently due to lower and more complex charge density. ► The cation-anion RDF shows two ion-pair shells above the hydration limit. ► Hydration limit occurs at a concentration lower than the bulk salt solubility limit.
