Design of the lattice parameter of embedded nanoparticles

► Bonding of nanoparticles can be influenced by a surrounding matrix phase. ► A model of charge-transfer across the interface in nanocomposites is presented. ► The proposed model explains experimentally observed lattice expansion in nc-TiC/a-C. ► The proposed model is supported by theoretical simulations using DFT-methods. ► The results opens for new possibilities in materials design.
