On the origin of IR spectral changes upon protein folding

The amide I peak of the unfolded state is typically shifted toward higher frequencies with respect to the folded-state peak. Evidence is provided that one of the main determinants of this shift is an effect arising from the apolar nature of the hydrophobic sidechains.
