Kinetics of the gas phase reactions of chlorine atoms and OH radicals with CF3CBrCH2 and CF3CF2CBrCH2

Long path length FTIR/smog chamber techniques were used to study the kinetics of the reactions of Cl atoms and OH radicals with CF3CBrCH2 and CF3CF2CBrCH2 in 700 Torr of N2 or air diluent at 296 ± 2 K. The reactions proceed with rate constants of k(Cl + CF3CBrCH2) = (9.20 ± 0.54) × 10−11, k(OH + CF3CBrCH2) = (4.21 ± 0.45) × 10−12, k(Cl + CF3CF2CBrCH2) = (8.44 ± 0.51) × 10−11, and k(OH + CF3CF2CBrCH2) = (3.48 ± 0.34) × 10−12 cm3 molecule−1 s−1. The atmospheric lifetimes of CF3CBrCH2 and CF3CF2CBrCH2 are approximately 2.8 and 3.4 days, respectively. These compounds will not contribute significantly to radiative forcing of climate change.

Rate constants were measured for the reaction of chlorine atoms and hydroxyl radicals with CF3CBrCH2 and CF3CF2CBrCH2 at 296 ± 2 K, using long path length FTIR/smog chamber techniques. Results are discussed with respect to the atmospheric chemistry of halogenated alkenes.
