Improving platinum catalyst binding energy to graphene through nitrogen doping

The binding energy between platinum and a graphene sheet is enhanced by nitrogen doping the lattice. The nitrogen atoms disrupt the delocalised carbon-carbon double bond causing the platinum to use alternative orbitals to bond to the surface.
