Acuminated fluorescence of Er3+ centres in endohedral fullerenes through the incarceration of a carbide cluster

The endohedral fullerene molecules, Er2@C82 (isomer I) (a) and Er2C2@C82 (isomer I) (b), emit in the infra-red upon excitation, exhibiting markedly different emission spectra.
