Hydrated metal-oxide versus dihydroxide structures of [MO2H2]+ cations with MFe, Co, and Ni

Experiment and theory demonstrate that the dihydroxo cations M(OH)2+ are destabilized compared to the hydrated oxide cations (H2O)MO+ in the series from MFe to MNi.
