Electronic excitations induced by surface reactions of H and D on gold

A metal-insulator-metal tunnel system has been used to study the extend of electronic substrate excitations caused by atomic hydrogen adsorption and recombinative desorption on a Au surface. Evidence is presented suggesting that a significant contribution arises from Langmuir-Hinshelwood type reactions. An isotope effect of 4.5 exists between H and D exposure.
