On the energetics of protein folding in aqueous solution

We argue that the structural stability of a protein in aqueous solution under physiological conditions is governed mainly by the entropy of water. We test 600 structures of protein G obtained as local-minimum states in water and find that the entropy of water is maximized for the native structure.
