Single nucleotide polymorphism analysis using different colored dye dimer probes

Fluorescence quenching by dye dimer formation has been utilized to develop hairpin-structured DNA probes for the detection of a single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in DNA sequences implicated in the penicillin resistance of Streptococcus pneumoniae. Depending on the target DNA either the green-labeled or the red-labeled DNA probe is opened and thus fluoresces.
