Bent core molecules and the biaxial nematic phase: A transverse dipole widens the optimal angle

A strong transverse dipole stabilises the biaxial nematic phase in bent core liquid crystal molecules. The dipole splits the Landau point into a Landau line, along which first order biaxial nematic to isotropic transitions take place.
