Pair formation and clustering of D on the basal plane of graphite

Adsorption of thermal D on the graphite basal plane was monitored with atomic resolution with STM. It was found, that D adsorbs preferential in pairs. Three pair types were identified with D bound to opposite corners of a single C6 ring or of two adjacent C6 rings.
