Quantitative phenomenological model of the BOLD contrast mechanism

► BOLD models are used for quantitative BOLD and vessel size imaging. ► Existing models approximate water diffusion in the presence of a blood vessel network. ► We use simulations to build a phenomenological model without making these assumptions. ► This model is used to find the validity criteria of existing analytical models. ► We quantify systematic errors introduced by using these models for BOLD data analysis.
