► The diffusional kurtosis is a quantitative metric of diffusional non-Gaussianity. ► MRI estimates of diffusional kurtosis may depend on the gradient pulse duration. ► For the Kärger model, gradient pulse duration effect is calculated analytically. ► The gradient pulse duration effect is small for this model.
