Reactions of ethanol on Ru(0001)

► Reactions of C2H5OH/Ru(0001) were studied with TPD and RAIRS. ► Ethanol adsorbs intact < 100 K and forms ethoxy at 175-200 K. ► Ethoxy undergoes β-hydrogen abstraction. ► Decarbonylation reaction yields CO, H2 and surface C.
