Reasoning of the self ordering in multilayer quantum dots

► We explain the direct physical reasons for the formation of favored sites for QDs. ► The potential for the elastic interactions between QDs is the hydrostatic stress. ► Long range displacements along hard directions manifest the cubic anisotropy. ► They are responsible for the attractive interactions. ► A criterion for materials that can induce lateral ordering is suggested.
