Effect of oxygen on the stability of Ag islands on Si(111)-7 × 7

► At room temperature, Ag islands on Si(111)-7 × 7 survive exposure to oxygen. ► The effect of oxygen is to change the height distribution of the Ag islands. ► DFT calculations show that this could be due to traces of atomic oxygen on top of, or beneath, Ag islands.
