Fast atom diffraction during grazing scattering from a MgO(001) surface

► Fast neutral atoms are scattered under grazing angles of incidence from MgO(001). ► For axial surface channeling conditions, we observe defined diffraction patterns. ► The diffraction patterns are analyzed in terms of trajectory calculations. ► Interaction potentials were derived from DFT and from HF wave functions.
