Revised tight-binding second moment potential for transition metal surfaces

► Conditions for using tight-binding second moment approximation (SMA) are reviewed. ► Revised SMA parameters are determined for Ag, Cu, Au, Ni, Pd, Co and Pt. ► Fit to a fixed ratio of experimental over calculated values of surface energies. ► Variation of surface energies from one element to the others is correctly reproduced.
