Quasi-elastic lineshapes for atoms and simple molecules undergoing jump rotation on surfaces

► Quasi-elastic scattering signatures for rotating adsorbates at surfaces are derived. ► The form of the rotational intermediate scattering function differs from translation. ► We present the scattering signatures for a number of experimentally relevant cases. ► Means of identifying these signatures in experimental data are discussed. ► A simple data reduction method is proposed.
