As a process controlled by ionic diffusion, the oxidation process of metals and alloys is sensitive to the stress states of diffusion medium. In this study, by applying static tensile/compressive load on samples during oxidation, the influence of stress states on the oxidation behavior of Zr55Cu30Al10Ni5 BMG in its supercooled liquid region was investigated. It was implied that compressive stress inhibits the oxidation while tensile stress has the opposite effect. This influence effect is obvious at relatively low temperatures but becomes less significant with the temperature rising. The influencing mechanism of stress state on BMG oxidation is discussed from the aspect of ionic diffusion, that is, stress state changes the charged vacancy concentration at the scale/substrate interface and thereby affects the oxidation rate.
