Within the frame of second generation bio-fuels development, the present work reports for the first time the impact of co-processing guaiacol as an oxygenated molecule representative of pyrolitic bio oils with a straight run gas oil (SRGO) in the framework of a hydrodesulfurization process (HDS). The reaction scheme observed during the hydrotreating of the sole guaiacol in the gas phase was compared to the conversion products observed during the co-processing of guaiacol with the SRGO, by using the two dimensional GC–MS analysis. During the co-processing, a decrease of the HDS performance of a reference CoMo/Al2O3 catalyst was observed at low temperature and high contact time. It was assigned to the formation of intermediate phenols competing with sulfur containing molecules for adsorbing on hydrogenation/hydrogenolysis sites. Above 320 °C, complete hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of guaiacol was observed and HDS could proceed without any further inhibition.
