Toxicological, toxicokinetic and gastroprotective evaluation of the benzaldehyde semicarbazone

► BS is safe in single oral doses for Wistar rats. ► BS protected the gastric mucosa against ethanol lesions. ► A mechanism of elimination of BS in biliary tract is proposed. ► An increase in biliary salts is a proposed mechanism to hepatotoxicity. ► BS is likely to undergo a first-pass effect after oral absorption.
