Adiponectin stimulates release of CCL2, -3, -4 and -5 while the surface abundance of CCR2 and -5 is simultaneously reduced in primary human monocytes

► Adiponectin induces the CC chemokines CCL2, -3, -4 and -5 in human monocytes. ► Surface abundance of CCR2 and CCR5 is reduced while CCR1 is not affected. ► CCL2, -3, and -5 in supernatants of monocytes positively correlate with BMI. ► Upregulation of CCL3 and CCL5 by adiponectin is impaired in obesity/type 2 diabetes. ► Therefore, adiponectin regulates chemokine activity at the ligand and receptor level.
