Body condition influences sexual signal expression independent of circulating androgens in male red-backed fairy-wrens

► We manipulated male body condition to examine effects on hormones and plumage. ► Males with enhanced condition molted more of the sexually preferred plumage. ► No relationship existed between condition and either androgens or corticosterone. ► Alternate explanations are required to link condition and sexual signal elaboration.
