Convergent evolution of defense mechanisms in oribatid mites (Acari, Oribatida) shows no “ghosts of predation past”

► Oribatid mite phylogeny was studied using 18S rDNA. ► Defensive structures (e.g. mineralization, ptychoidy) evolved convergently. ► Recent predatory pressure maintains these defensive structure. ► Strong predator defense allows oribatid mites to live in 'enemy-free space'.
