Shark tales: A molecular species-level phylogeny of sharks (Selachimorpha, Chondrichthyes)

► We investigated the phylogenetic relationships of 229 species of sharks. ► We used four mtDNA and one nuclear gene and included all eight Orders and 31 families. ► The resulting hypothesis agrees with prior studies on major relationships (Orders). ► Many of the currently recognized families are not monophyletic. ► Our results suggest that Echinorhinus is not a squaliform but rather related to saw sharks.
