► Control of toothpaste abrasivity is an important factor in public health. ► Ambiguities confound the testing due to conjoining of the BS, ADA and ISO standards. ► Here, enamel/dentin wear by the two standard abrasives determined profilometrically. ► Under prescribed conditions, the extent of tissue wear was simulator-dependent. ► Test protocols require revision to ensure statistical validity and sensitivity.
