Dopamine D5 receptors are localized at asymmetric synapses in the rat hippocampus

▶D5Rs are present on all parts of the rat hippocampal pyramidal neuron, but are concentrated at synaptic membranes on a subpopulation of dendritic spines. ▶The widespread distribution of the D5R enables dopamine to potentially affect inhibitory but to a greater extent excitatory signalling. ▶The D5R densities were similar in stratum oriens and stratum radiatum. ▶Therefore, the D5R can modulate signals in both the apical and basal dendrite of the pyramidal cell.
