► On urban wastelands we found 12 Species of European Conservation concern (SPEC). ► Habitat models describe the influence of vegetation and urban matrix on birds. ► Human intrusion did not negatively affect species occurrence. ► Especially wastelands larger than 7 ha harbour threatened bird species. ► Wasteland habitats have potential for the conservation of threatened bird species.
