Experimental natural substrate preference of southern king crab Lithodes santolla larvae

► We determine substrate preference of southern king crab Lithodes santolla larvae. ► Zoea stages are benthic and we provide first evidence of their substrate selection. ► Megalopa also selects complex substrata as shells, gravel and cobble over sand. ► Substrate selection pattern seems to be a density-dependent process. ► Substrate selection occurs during both nocturnal and diurnal periods.
