Evolutionary shift dynamics on a cycle

► We investigate a new model of one-dimensional spatial evolution among cells. ► When a cell divides, it does not replace a neighbor, but shifts neighbors aside. ► We find a very strong benefit to cooperative strategies. ► For large populations, selection maximizes whole population fitness.
