The survival of the conformist: Social pressure and renewable resource management

► Resource stock and social dynamics concerning non-excessive extraction are coupled via ostracism. ► Cooperation is the outcome of an evolutionary process of imitation of successful strategies. ► We find that, when reputational considerations matter, sustainable outcomes are achieved. ► Three regimes are identified, one where norm-observing and norm-violating types coexist.
