► We examined the recruitment and mortality of Melaleuca quinquenervia in the Everglades. ► Post-biocontrol populations were 99% smaller than pre-biocontrol populations. ► Biocontrol agents did not increase mortality of weed seedlings. ► Weed invasion trajectory likely changed by depleted aerial seed banks.
