Transcriptional activation of a pectate lyase gene, RbPel1, during petal abscission in rose

► We have isolated a pectate lyase gene, RbPel1, that is active during petal abscission. ► RbPel1 transcripts accumulate during both, ethylene induced and field abscission. ► No major change in expression is observed in non-abscising flowers of Rosa hybrida. ► RbPel1 action may be important for dissolution of middle lamella during abscission.
