Acoustic characterization of seahorse tank environments in public aquaria: A citizen science project

► Ambient noise and design specs of tanks were surveyed among public aquaria. ► Ambient noise ranged from 116 to 143 dB SPL (re: 1 μPa) total RMS power. ► Ambient noise averaged 126 dB SPL (re: 1 μPa) total RMS power. ► Glass tanks were louder than acrylic and concrete tanks, but not fiberglass tanks. ► Bare bottom tanks were louder than tanks with a plenum or gravel bottom.
